“I’m not sure about this,” I said as the four of us sat in Judd’s little car just down the street from Ben’s apartment, Ernie and his long legs in the front, myself and Ada-Mae in the back. “If we’re going to break into Ben’s apartment to do this spell, then shouldn’t we at least wait for dark or something?”

“No time,” Ada-Mae said, “especially with Ben’s ghost fading. Anyway, I’ve brought along something that might just help.” She produced a small glass bottle with a spray top on it. Once, perhaps, it might have been a perfume bottle, but now it contained a dark green liquid that looked like someone had let damp vegetation slowly rot in it for a very long time. Perhaps they had?

“What’s that?” I asked suspiciously. “Witch pepper spray?”

“It’s the next best thing to an invisibility potion,” Ada-Mae said proudly, then ruined that by adding, “hopefully.”

“Could we not just have an invisibility potion, then?” I asked, having decided I didn’t want that green mulch anywhere near me. I had already ruined a pair of pants the previous evening, and I did not want to ruin any more clothes.

Ada-Mae scoffed. “Yeah, right, Sidney. Good one. An invisibility potion! You’ve been watching too many movies, young lady.” Without warning, she sprayed three quick misty squirts of the stuff at me, half-blinding me on the first squirt and managing to get some in my mouth on the second.

“Hey! Yuck.” However, as the scent of it wafted over me, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the concoction smelled strongly of lavender.

“There,” Ada-Mae said, spraying herself, then leaning over to spray Ernie while Judd looked on worriedly, likely concerned about his car’s upholstery, “all done. Now, anyone who sees you and is close enough to smell the potion will soon enough forget that they did.”

Wow. Okay, I was impressed, provided it worked as advertised. The three of us got out of the car and headed toward Ben’s apartment, which was part of a two-story condominium block. We left Judd waiting in the car as our getaway driver. Then something occurred to me. “So,” I said, turning to Ada-Mae, “will this concoction work on Judd?”

We all turned back to the car to see Judd scratching his head as if he had no idea why he was there or what he was doing.

“Wait!” Ada-Mae called out, but it was too late. Judd had already forgotten about us and started the car up and pulled away. “Doggone it! That little detail slipped right by me again.”

“So we’ll be walking back then,” I said, looking doubtfully up at the increasingly angry sky above our heads. “If we don’t end up getting arrested. Should be dry in the back of a police car, at least.”

“Well, we know the spray works,” Ernie offered, always supportive of Ada-Mae.

“Of course, it works,” Ada-Mae said a little haughtily, although I could see that she was blushing with pride.

The block of apartments was poor by the standards of Crystal Beach,
